Advisory for Indian nationals/students traveling to Canada via 3rd country including Ethiopia (10 Sept 2021)

  • The Government of Canada has imposed ban on direct flights from India to Canada. This ban has been extended and currently remains in effect till 21 September 2021. It is also made mandatory for travelers from India to obtain a negative COVID-19 molecular test from the third country, before the traveler is allowed to enter Canada.
  • This Mission has come across with many instances where Indian students/passengers faced difficulties after getting stranded in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
  • In view of the above, Indian students/passengers travelling to Canada via Addis Ababa are advised to;
    • Obtain and familiarize with the latest travel requirements, including all health security requirements, enforced by the Canadian authorities by accessing official websites of Government of Canada.
    • Familiarize themselves with the requirements of the Airlines involved.
    • Ensure that they have all the required travel documents and travel approvals from Canadian government authorities before embarking on the journey. Travelers must ensure that their visa approvals, travel approvals and medical clearances are up to date and uploaded on the Canadian government portal before embarking on such journeys.
    • Not to undertake the journey unless the passenger possess the confirmed flight tickets for onward travel to Canada from the third country location.
    • Carry enough money (USD) and be prepared for quarantine regimes in third country. Travelers found COVID-19 positive after test at Addis Ababa are not allowed to travel besides subjecting to quarantine as per the local health protocols.
  • All travelers are advised to exercise prudence, and to ensure that all their documents are complete in all respect, including uploading on the Canadian government portal, besides having confirmed air tickets for the entire journey.
