Ethiopian New Year and Festivals in September – Advance Celebrations (22 Aug 2022)

Last Updated on November 23, 2022

Embassy of India in collaboration with Nahoo TV celebrated the coming festival of the Ethiopian New Year. Also, there are many festivals in Ethiopia during the month of September including the popular Meskel festival, the Irreecha festival of the Oromo people and the Masiqqala festival of the Dorze people in the Gamo highlands in southern Ethiopia. Embassy celebrated these festivals in advance as our Ethiopian friends would be busy celebrating these festivals with their beloved families and communities in September.

Today, Indian Embassy officers were honored to serve Indian delicacies to our guests.

Ethiopian people live and cherish their family bonds, and their connections with relatives, their communities. Many people still maintain connections to their villages. Every Ethiopian looks forward to this time of the year when many people who live in different parts of the country to earn their livelihood, as traders, as businessmen, as laborers, as teachers, as office workers – go back to their families and relatives to celebrate these beautiful festivals. Families burn the Chibo fire, gather to bond around this fireplace, sharing their joys and sorrows.

It is also the time of the year, when the Ethiopian landscape is dressed in its most beautiful golden colors of the Adey Abeba flower (bright yellow flowers).

Wishing all Ethiopian friends a very happy Ethiopian New Year and joyous celebrations!
